Transport Sector Advances Highway Greening Agenda During Mazingira Week

A collective effort to promote greener and more sustainable transport corridors took shape along the Eastern Bypass as the country marked Highway Greening Day during Mazingira Week.

The exercise brought together Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Hon. Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah Barasa, Principal Secretary for Transport Mr. Mohamed Daghar, CBS, Principal Secretary for Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua, CBS, officials from State Corporations under the Ministry of Roads and Transport and members of the community.

The activity was held under the Mazingira Week theme, “Our Environment, Our Responsibility,” and supports the Government’s 15 Billion Trees Initiative, which seeks to mobilise collective action towards environmental restoration and increased tree cover.

The State Department for Transport participated in the exercise as part of the transport sector’s broader commitment to promoting sustainable and climate-resilient transport infrastructure.

Greening transport corridors plays an important role in enhancing environmental sustainability while contributing to more resilient infrastructure and healthier public spaces. The initiative also provides an opportunity for Government agencies, communities and other stakeholders to take collective responsibility for environmental conservation.

Through continued collaboration with State Corporations, communities and other stakeholders, the transport sector remains committed to integrating environmental sustainability into the development and management of Kenya’s transport system.
