Transport P.S. Holds Consultative Meeting with Federation of Public Transport Sector Members
The Principal Secretary for Transport, Mr. Mohamed Daghar, yesterday held a consultative meeting with the Federation of Public Transport Sector (FTPS) members.
The meeting brought together the major stakeholders in the public transport sector and the National Government through the state department for transport.
The meeting was called to address the challenges being experienced by the public transport operators in their day-to-day operations.
While addressing the forum, the PS underscored the sector's pivotal role in the development of the economy of the country at large.
He underscored the government’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to the problems bedeviling the sector. Among the challenges discussed during the meeting were:
Third-party insurance challenges where some insurance companies that underwrite public transport operators are not paying claims, yet public transport operators pay premiums and policy excess.
The limited and inconsistent public transport infrastructure provision leading to severe and chaotic traffic congestion, especially in the Nairobi central district.
Road safety and driver behavior leading to 85% of road accidents due to reckless driving
Regulation of boda bodas and protection from burning of PSVs after an accident, among others.
Also, at the meeting with the PS were Director of Road and Rail Paul King'ori, a representative from the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) and other State Department officials.
The FPTS delegation was led by their chairman, Edwins Mukabanah and secretary, Dickson Mbugua.
