NEW PARTNERSHIP TO ACCELERATE KENYA’S E-MOBILITY TRANSITION

The State Department for Transport and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, today signed a Cooperation Agreement to support the implementation of Kenya’s National Electric Mobility Policy.

The Agreement was signed on behalf of the State Department for Transport by the Principal Secretary, Mr. Mohamed Daghar, CBS, while the IFC was represented by Ms. Paramita Dasgupta, Manager, Country Advisory and Economics for Eastern and Southern Africa.

Under the Kenya Electric Vehicle Sector Project, IFC will provide technical assistance to support the development of the legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks required to operationalise Kenya’s electric mobility agenda.

The project will support the development of an E-Mobility Bill and attendant Regulations, as well as a Sessional Paper, to provide a legal framework for the implementation of the National Electric Mobility Policy. It will also support a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment, the development of short, medium and long-term targets for Kenya’s e-mobility transition and a review of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives across the electric vehicle value chain.

The cooperation will further support public education and awareness initiatives, strengthen institutional capacity within the State Department for Transport and promote private sector investment in electric vehicle manufacturing, assembly and charging infrastructure.

The Agreement marks an important step in moving Kenya’s e-mobility agenda from policy to implementation and strengthening the country’s framework for a sustainable, inclusive and investment-ready electric mobility sector.
