State Department Strengthens Stakeholder Engagement on the National Electric Mobility Policy

The State Department for Transport, with support from GIZ and the World Resources Institute (WRI), hosted the Inception Workshop for the Technical Working Groups to advance the implementation of the National Electric Mobility Policy. The workshop forms part of the Department's continued efforts to accelerate Kenya's transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable transport system through inclusive stakeholder engagement.

The stakeholder workshop brought together representatives from government institutions, the private sector, development partners, academia and industry players to discuss the implementation of the Policy and identify practical measures that will accelerate the adoption of electric mobility across the country.

The National Electric Mobility Policy provides a comprehensive framework for promoting the uptake of electric vehicles by supporting investment in charging infrastructure, strengthening the legal and regulatory framework, encouraging local manufacturing and assembly, developing technical skills and providing fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to grow the sector. The Policy also seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, enhance energy security and position Kenya as a regional leader in sustainable transport.

During the workshop, participants exchanged views on infrastructure development, financing, technical capacity, standards, research and innovation, as well as public awareness and partnerships necessary to support the successful implementation of the Policy. The Technical Working Groups also outlined priority actions, roles and collaborative approaches that will guide the implementation of the Policy and ensure coordinated delivery of its objectives.

The discussions reaffirmed the importance of collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, development partners, academia and industry in creating an enabling environment for electric mobility.

The State Department for Transport remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to implement the National Electric Mobility Policy and drive the transition to a modern, efficient, low-carbon and inclusive transport system that supports Kenya's economic growth and environmental sustainability.
