NAMATA Launches Ngong Road Route 111 Pilot Project to Enhance Public Transport in Nairobi Metropolitan Area

The Ministry of Roads and Transport, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has today launched a pilot project along Ngong Road.

The pilot initiative, dubbed the Ngong Road Route 111 Pilot Study, under Project for Capacity Building for Bus Operation Policy and Management in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.is being implemented by the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA) and brings together key stakeholders in the Transport Sector.

This project seeks to enhance practical experience and build capacity in public transport administration and management. It also aims to assess and improve public transport service quality; particularly in terms of reliability, safety, and comfort. Insights gained from this pilot will inform broader strategies to enhance public transport services across the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA).

The pilot project was officially flagged off by the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport, Mr. Mohamed Daghar, CBS, who emphasized the urgent need to decongest Nairobi and improve public transport efficiency to support economic and social mobility.

With Phase I of the project nearing completion, preparations are underway for Phase II, which will build on the outcomes of the pilot study to implement further enhancements and policy reforms in public transport management.
