Government Signs Contract for JKIA Modernization
Today, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, led the signing of the contract for the JKIA Design and Build Contract on the Modernization and Development Project, a Major National Infrastructure Investment valued at 154.2 billion Kenya Shillings.
The contract was signed on behalf of the Government by the Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Ms. Teresia Mbaika, while the General Manager, Mr. Yu Xiaodong, signed on behalf of the contracted firm, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC),
The JKIA Modernization Project is a strategic undertaking designed to expand airport capacity, enhance safety, improve passenger and cargo services, and strengthen Kenya’s position as a leading regional aviation hub.
The scope of work includes:
•Construction of a new terminal building and associated support facilities,
•Modernization and upgrade of existing infrastructure and
•Improvement of airside and landside operations, and enhancement of overall operational efficiency and service delivery.
The procurement process has been ongoing for the past three months, following the completion of the JKIA Master Plan in February 2026. Over 40 companies participated in the pre-bid conference held in April 2026, which was designed to provide clarity on the project expectations and scope of work. The process was conducted in line with applicable procurement laws and regulatory requirements, with all submissions evaluated on technical and financial merit.
Other officials present included the Managing Director, Kenya Airport Authority (KAA), Eng Moses Wekesa, legal representatives from the ministry and CRBC, and other top Ministry, CRBC and KAA Officials.
The Ministry reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and strict compliance with all required standards to deliver world class aviation infrastructure at JKIA.
