Task Force on The Development of National Electric Mobility Policy Holds Consultative Forum with County Executives

The Task Force on the Development of a National Electric Mobility Policy, Strategy, Legislations and Regulations (the e-Mobility Task Force) held its second Consultative Forum on Friday 2nd February, in Nairobi.

The Task Force, gazetted by the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen on 4th August 2023 is expected to develop a National Electric Mobility Policy (the e-Mobility Policy) covering all modes of transport (road, air, rail, and maritime) to create an enabling environment for the development, growth and adoption of electric vehicles in Kenya.

The second Workshop was held for County Executive Committee Members in charge of Transportation from County Governments across the country. This follows the first Workshop held with Public Service Transport industry players from Nairobi Metropolitan area.

During the Workshop, the Task Force briefed participants on the country's current situational analysis for electric mobility. One notable aspect was that electric vehicles could absorb the country's off-peak demand for electricity during nighttime. The Task Force also highlighted the socio-economic and environmental benefits of Electric Vehicles (EV) as compared to conventional, Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. These included lower operating costs, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, noise pollution reduction and access to clean energy which would reduce air pollution, especially in urban areas.

The Task Force Vice Chair, Ms. Jerotich Seii encouraged participants to freely submit their views which will be incorporated in the draft policy.

Electric mobility is in line with Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) 2023-2027, Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) 2022-2050 and the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) through which Kenya targets a 32% reduction in Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.
