The maritime transport system in Kenya consists of one major seaport, and other smaller scheduled ports along Kenyan coastline. Mombasa port is the principal seaport . The port handles all types of ships and cargo services not only for Kenya but also the other hinterland countries of Uganda,Rwanda,Burundi,Democratic republic of Congo among others. Kenya is a fast growing maritime Nation with the port of Mombasa handling over 438,000 TEUS in 2005 and with a 13 million Tonnes of cargo. The port has reached a throughput of 43 moves per hour due to installation of new equipment.
